Made With Care

events

Mason Studio partners, Stanley and Ashley, were invited by Reznick Carpets to attend a weekend workshop to design a Moroccan-inspired carpet with SickKids Ambassadors from the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. They bonded with 13 year-old Brianna over sketching and brought their collaborative design to a full-scale 8 by 10 foot painted canvas. Reznick Carpets brought the artwork to Nepal to be made into in to hand-knotted rugs.

In April 2015, the designers and ambassadors were reunited for the unveiling of their creations as part of the Reznick Made With Care Collection. The event was opened up to the design community and resulted in an inspiring and productive fundraising event for the SickKids Foundation in support of Marnie's Studio.

Marnie’s studio is a Creative Arts Therapy program providing children with space and materials to engage in art expression; a safe place for play and therapeutic clowning, equipped with musical instruments and a recording studio.

For more information on the event and to learn more about the Made with Care collection, please visit Reznick Carpets website.

Tung

collaborations

A relationship was formed between Mason Studio and Tung, the Toronto-based graphic design studio, after paths were crossed on numerous occasions. Emily Tu and Edmond Ng founded Tung as a response to create ‘honest, intelligent and beautifully crafted work.’ Their alignment of values to Mason Studio was clearly evident after a discussion on their methodology and approach.

Tung was brought to the challenge to overhaul Mason’s website to reflect development since the Studio’s conception; a site to exhibit a new and expanding portfolio of work, to share relationships close to the Studio’s projects, and to share core messages critical to the Mason’s process. The digital manifestation of Mason Studio is Tung’s acute and sensitive response to intangible values, attitudes and beliefs.

Mason Studio is honoured to have the opportunity to collaborate and have them share their talents. To learn more about Tung, visit their website madebytung.com or message them at hello@madebytung.com

A0 Perimeter Series

events

Mason Studio partnered with communication firm ALSO Collective to create a creative joint force called A0. The studios share philosophies of design, but originate from two distinct practices; ALSO occupies a space in digital media and graphic design, while Mason inhabits the space of environments and interiors.

A0 represents a shift in the boundaries of design, offering a space where two, three and four dimensions cohabitate and coalesce into a hybrid design practice.

In 2014, A0 organized a series of panel discussion drawing hundreds of audience members to engage in critical discourse between industry, public and students. It was the interest of A0 to create a dialogue connecting different realms to instigate new ideas. The first three topics of discussion were:

  • Hybrid Design: Collaboration in Practice, at Ryerson University
  • Public and Community Engagement Through Design, at University of Toronto
  • Design and National Identity, at Design Exchange

The third talk of the series, Design and National Identity, drew a crowd of hundreds to participate with the distinguished panel including Dr. Michael Prokopow (OCAD University), Vanessa Eckstein (BLOK Design), Todd Falkowsky (Canadian Design Resource) and Catherine Osborne (Azure Magazine). The event was moderated by Design Exchange president Shauna Levy.

Dinner by Design

studio

For Toronto's first annual GE Monogram Dinner by Design 2015, Mason Studio was invited to create an ‘experiential dining environment’ to accompany a grand meal composed by local chef talents. It was a privilege to participate in this event amongst 10 renowned artists, designers and architects who created neighboring rooms. In learning that the proceeds of this event went to two great causes, Design Exchange and Casey House, it was without hesitation that Mason Studio would be a participant.

Casey House cares for people in Toronto living with HIV and provides a dedicated team driven to deliver health care excellence with a commitment to respect and kindness. www.caseyhouse.com

Design Exchange is Canada’s only museum dedicated to the pursuit of design excellence and preservation of design heritage. At the crossroads of multiple disciplines from furniture design and architecture to graphic design and fashion, DX exhibitions, talks and educational programming reflect contemporary culture. www.dx.org
